Sydney Vacation House, Miradouro
Sydney Vacation House was a contest made for [AC-CA] Architecture Competitions. The project was to design a house near Bondy Beach (Sydney), made from shipping containers.
Mi·ra·dou·ro, an elevated place or structure affording a wide view for observation; corridor, gallery or pavilion to enjoy the view.
And as a miradouro, the house is projected to have a privileged view of the fantastic landscape. The house concept is to show its building structure, making the shipping contentors visible in certain strategic parts, but covering them in the other ones to improve functionality and thermical response.
The main axis of the house is composed by 4 + 2 contentors, and includes the day-areas, oriented north-east - south-west, with cross ventilation and maximum daylight, a skylight reinforces the idea. The crossing axis contains the ‘leisure’ area. The swimming pool location allows a refreshing bath with amazing views to Bondi Bay. On the other end is a jacuzzi, a strategic point for users to make the best of their vacation. In the center a fireplace completes the area.
The night areas, both master bedroom and guest rooms (2 contentors each) are perpendicular and attached to the main day axis, to allow best communication between spaces and avoid cross paths between users. Main entrance is marked with a vertical contentor, standing out from the exterior but also functioning as a skylight. Acces by car is done in a lower level. It is formed by 2 contentors located in paralell and under the guest rooms, that includes the utility, laundry and storage areas, with direct link to the kitchen and pantry. The guest room’s roof aligns with the swimming pool terrace, making a continuous overlook space, part wood-foored and part grass, making it a more natural and confortable environment.Master bedroom, together with the office space, have an important elevated location, separated from the main axis, in order to give privacy and privileged views, both to Bondi Bay and Tasman sea: movement and relax. A terrace is facing the beach for a more active mood, while bedroom, bath and office are oriented to the sea, for a relaxed and quiet mood.
